Washington State Senate Dems Embrace Podcasting

This legislative session, the Washington State Senate Democratic Caucus has started podcasting.  You can find audio files from your favorite Democratic Senators mixed in amongst their press releases or subscribe to the RSS podcast feed if you're one of those podcast junkies I see riding the bus each morning.  (Me, I still prefer listing to NPR on my $30 radio, call me a luddite whydoncha.)

The podcasts are ~2 minute pieces in the format of radio news actualities, featuring sound bites from Senators.   Early podcasters include:

  • Senator Karen Fraser (D- Thursdon County) on outlawing sex tourism in Washington
  • Sens. Darlene Fairley (D-Lake Forest Park), Marilyn
Rasmussen (D-Eatonville), Rosa Franklin (D-Tacoma), Bill Finkbeiner (R-Kirkland), and Lisa Brown (D-Spokane) on achieving equal
rights for Washington gays and lesbians.
  • Sen. Tracey Eide (D-Federal Way) on giving legislation to promote small businesses.

Kudos to the Dems and their hardworking caucus staff for taking the risk of exploring the technological frontier.  I hope that as they all grow more comfortable with the medium that they "break down the fourth wall" so to speak and start speaking directly and in a personal voice to the people they represent, rather sticking with the pseudo-objectivity of conventional radio news story format.  That's the real power of this new medium.

NPI began podcasting this month:

The ultimate conclusion we've drawn is that the progressive movement needs to be creating and offering more audio content to our fellow Americans.

We're going to do our part by podcasting regularly.

Our plan is to release at least two episodes every month, and we may do special episodes occassionally.

Our episodes will be short and sweet, (typically five to six minutes in length) and well worth your time.

Thanks for the nice write-up about my colleagues in the State Senate Dem Caucus staff. I just wanted everyone to be aware that the House Dem Caucus is also podcasting. Visit:

Also Rep. Deb Wallace has her blog up and a few Podcasts.
