Traveling Freeway blogger in Seattle

Nationally known freeway blogger, the Scarlet Pimpernel, has been visiting Seattle recently.  He puts up simple signs with the word “Peace” or “The War is a Lie” on it.  That's what he does, goes up and down the west coast, visiting towns and cities and putting up signs at good places along the freeway so people can see them.  He takes photos and writes about where he's been.

He wrote a post on the best places to put up signs in Seattle, along with some nice photos.  His criteria for location is one that has both the most visibility to freeway traffic and is the hardest to reach and take down.  There is no advocacy, just photos of the signs and information on where he parked and the kind of tape that worked best.

As Scarlet says, "The basic rule of freewayblogging is this: when you put a sign up next to a freeway people will read it until someone takes it down."  He's put up over 5000 signs and never had any difficulty.  He talks about how to make signs as well and where to place them so that they are entirely legal.

All signs made with cardboard and paint, lettered by overhead projector and placed on the 5, 405, 84 and 99 during rush hour. As political, non-commercial speech placed safely (on the inside of the fencing, not the outside) they are fully protected by the First Amendment.

He's just been in Portland too:

What a benign and edgy form of peace activism!
